Within me -
where no light falls,
where time forgets to pass -
there rests an image.
Not one I have seen.
Not one I remember.
It is a state of being.
A quiet arrangement of form and absence.
A vase, flawless in outline,
drawn by thought, held by silence.
But it has no bottom.
Whatever is poured into it slips away.
Whatever seeks rest cannot stay.
And yet - it remains.
Not empty, but open.
A space within me
that holds nothing,
and in doing so,
carries everything.
This still life does not breathe.
It does not speak.
And yet, it tells:
of a form that refuses to hold,
of time vibrating in stillness.
In it, I see
what cannot be named -
the porous,
the fragile,
that which remains
by letting go.
Perhaps it is a self-portrait.
Perhaps just a dream of containment.
Perhaps it is what Walter Benjamin called
an image that “flashes up
in the moment of recognition.”
Not to be explained -
but to appear.
And so it rests,
the bottomless vase,
in that deepest interior
that escapes the gaze,
and yet is entirely made of seeing.
